Sabah Dap Meets Dcm Bung After Severe Flash Floods

Sabah deputy chief minister Bung Moktar Radin (second right) agreed to a meeting with state DAP reps including Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin (centre).KOTA KINABALU: Sabah DAP elected representatives told deputy chief minister Bung Moktar Radin that Kota Kinabalu’s worn out drainage system was the main reason behind one of the worst flash floods to hit the state capital in years.
In a meeting with Bung, who is also state works minister, Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin and the state reps for Luyang and Likas, Phoong Jin Zhe and Tan Lee Fatt also slammed the contractors in charge of maintaining the system.
They claimed these companies that should be cleaning and maintaining the drains on a routine were not doing their job.
“Therefore, when there is heavy downpour, it would result in flooding as the water could not recede in time,” they said, in a joint statement today.
The reps suggested that the state government should take stern action and fine these companies if they were found to have not performed their responsibilities as the flash floods had affected the public severely.
They hoped the meeting with Bung would move the state Cabinet to improve Kota Kinabalu’s drainage system.
An upgrade of the system was also needed as the state capital is a developing city, they added.
A non-stop downpour for several hours here last Saturday triggered severe flash floods all over the state capital, inundating main roads and homes including those of a state minister and other state VIPs.
Among those affected was Sabah local government and housing minister Masidi Manjun, whose house is located in Kampung Likas here, about a five-minute drive from the city centre.
Former chief minister Salleh Said Keruak’s house, also situated in the same area, was also affected. - FMT
