Rtm Is Always On Air But Never On Time Regarding Wages Of Its Professional Part Timers

A PART-TIME English editor & news presenter has taken to the social media to chide national broadcaster Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) with non-payment of her “first salary” after two months into her role.
In defending herself for having ‘to rant’ on the matter, Noor Ainun Jariah Noor Harun said her intention is “to seek accountability and action from the Prime Minister and the Communications Ministry”.
“How can a national government broadcasting company treat its employees so poorly? What is the point of announcing salary increments (for civil servants) when some employees don’t even receive their basic monthly pay on time?” she fumed in a recent LinkedIn post.
“I know some might suggest filing a formal complaint or e-mailing the RTM director-general (Suhaimi Sulaiman) or any other higher-ups. Let me assure you, these steps have been taken countless times by others.
“Each month, the excuses from higher-ups change: the admin is on leave, the admin is sick, the admin is new – the list goes on.”
With desperation having driven her up the wall, Noor Ainun contended that it would not matter anymore if speaking out of what she described as “systemic flaws” makes her a “bad employee”.

Instead, I want to know what the Communications Ministry plans to do about this,” she demanded. “Why are contract piecemeal workers being treated this way? Do we not matter?”
Recall that on Aug 20, RTM has promised to resolve up to two months of outstanding salaries for part-timers hired on a piecemeal basis by the end of that month.
In a statement shared by broadcasting director-general Suhaimi Sulaiman on X, RTM said the Finance Ministry is in the final stages of approving a special payment rate for the affected part-timers.
“RTM had previously submitted an application to the ministry following the cancellation of all previous approvals by the ministry in a letter dated June 24 which affected procurement rates for non-civil servants,” stated the national broadcaster.
“With the ministry’s approval, payments for part-time services will be more organised and will adhere to government procurement procedures. All outstanding payments for part-time employees will be cleared this month.”
With regard to Noor Ainun’s woes, RTM is seemingly viewing it as an “isolated case” by alleging that her claims documents were incomplete and that she had been requested to re-submit those documents for processing.
“The issue pertaining to wage payment of the RTM creative workforce (piecemeal) which has gone viral is an isolated one. The complaint was made by a piecemeal who commenced duty with RTM last month (October 2024),” the national broadcaster pointed out in a statement.

“The payment process for all piecemeal staffers in RTM abides by the Procurement Procedure WP10.9 whereby payment will be received within seven to 14 workdays after the submission of complete documents.” – Focus Malaysia
