Rm1m To Do Nothing Dap Man Urges Mps To Demand Tribunal On Sidek
DAP central executive committee member Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali has urged MPs to demand a special tribunal to investigate Mohd Sidek Hassan's claim that he once had a cushy with 1MDB, which entailed him doing nothing.
In a statement today, Sheikh Umar (above) said Sidek was the chief secretary to the government at the time, and if the matter was not addressed, the civil service's integrity would be tarnished.
"I urge MPs to speak up in Parliament to demand a special tribunal to investigate (Sidek's) revelations. If true, those responsible must be sanctioned. This is crucial to prevent this from recurring.
"Even if (Sidek) were to return the money he received, it would not restore the reputation of the civil service. Only a special tribunal to investigate and charge those responsible can restore dignity to the civil service," said Sheikh Umar.
He said action must be taken to be fair to all the civil servants who are clean and ethical.
Mohd Sidek HassanOn Tuesday, Sidek told the Kuala Lumpur High Court that he was paid around RM30,000 a month to sit on 1MDB's board of advisers from July 1, 2010, until June 23, 2012, when he was still chief secretary.
He was retained on the board following his retirement for RM10,000 a month until June 2015, when he was appointed chairperson of Petronas.
Sidek told the court that then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak had put him on the board. Sidek was a prosecution witness in the trial against Najib for four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering involving RM2.28 billion of 1MDB's funds.
Based on Sidek's testimony, Sheikh Umar estimated that the former collected around RM1 million in fees for not having to do anything.
"For a senior civil servant, is he not aware that he was being paid in an unethical manner? He also claimed that 1MDB was used for political funding.
"This raises a new question: How could a chief secretary to the government keep quiet (until now) when knowing that this was wrong?
"Imagine if BN was still in power. Surely that (there will be many) who continue to enjoy such immoral sources of income," said Sheikh Umar. - Mkini
