Reckless Move Wee Short Circuits Loke S Digital Agenda

PARLIAMENT | Former transport minister Wee Ka Siong described his successor Anthony Loke’s move to digitise driver’s licence and road tax information via the MyJPJ mobile application as “reckless”.
The MCA president warned it posed a data leakage risk since personal information can be obtained by keying in a person’s identity card number.
“I can show you how the (data) leak can happen. If that happens, 33 million data can be traced by any individual.
“Secondly, what is important is 16 million driver’s licence data - those details are there. I think this is not being careful,” he said when debating the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat.
Wee said he had shot down the proposal when he was the transport minister because of the risk involved.
“I can show you that many IC numbers can be detected easily. Once you check the voters’ registry, you can get everyone’s numbers there. 
‘If that can be accessed so easily, I think this needs immediate action from the government.”
Wee: Look at the bigger perspective 
He also called on the government to look at a bigger perspective when it comes to the digitalisation of data and information and ensure that any initiative must abide by the Personal Data Protection Act.
Transport Minister Anthony LokeOn Feb 10, Loke announced that Malaysians no longer needed to display their motor vehicle licences on their vehicles as part of the RTD’s digitisation efforts.
However, the sticker must still be displayed on all commercial and foreign-owned vehicles, including public transportation. 
Holders of learner driving permits, vocational licence holders and foreigners with Malaysian or international driving permits must also carry their physical licences.
The announcement drew mixed reactions from users, with some quarters who raised concerns over the security aspects of personal data involved in the MyJPJ application.
In response to that, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said on Sunday that the vulnerability identified in the MyJPJ application has been successfully overcome before it was launched. 
Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi FadziFahmi said Cyber Security Malaysia had identified the vulnerability of the application during the process of developing the application.
Yesterday, Loke announced a new feature that would be added to the registration steps on the MyJPJ application as a security measure.
He said that new users would have to insert the unique codes from their driving licence when registering a new account in the application. - Mkini
