Prosecution Withdraws Request To Prioritise Zahid S Trial Over 1mdb
The prosecution today withdrew the letter sent to the High Court judge which requested that priority be given to the Yayasan Akalbudi (YAB) corruption trial involving Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi over jailed ex-premier Najib Abdul Razak’s 1MDB trial.
At the proceedings of the case today, deputy public prosecutor Abdul Malik Ayob informed the court that the matter has now been resolved with the withdrawal of the letter.
According to a report by Berita Harian, judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah told the court that no one can decide what cases should be given priority.
In the letter, Malik purportedly wrote that he was instructed to request that the court prioritise Zahid’s case over the 1MDB trial against Najib.
Sequerah is the Kuala Lumpur High Court judge presiding over both cases.
Meanwhile, Zahid’s lawyer, Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, said the letter could be interpreted as putting pressure on the court.
“We hope this trial will be conducted according to the rule of law,” he said.
Zahid is facing 47 charges, 12 for criminal breach of trust, eight for corruption, and 27 for money laundering involving tens of millions of ringgit belonging to YAB.
Najib has been jailed for 12 years and fined RM210 million following the Federal Court’s upholding of his conviction in the SRC International corruption trial,
The former finance minister is also facing a separate 1MDB corruption trial in which he is accused of committing 25 counts of abuse of power and money laundering involving RM2.28 billion. - Mkini
