Professors Council Warns Racist Thomas Over Failed Malay Govt Remarks
The National Professor's Council (MPN) has hit out at former attorney-general Tommy Thomas who suggested that the opposition play up the issue that a "Malay government" had failed.
The council's president Raduan Che Rose said Thomas' remarks were "very racist" and warned him against racial profiling the government.
The former attorney-general had made the remarks at a forum in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
Based on several media reports, he remarked that Dr Mahathir Mohamad had stepped down from office in 2020 and made way for two governments over the perception that the government was not Malay enough.
However, he said after two and a half years of "Malay-dominated" cabinets, he said it was clear to him and Malay voters that the outcome has not been satisfactory.
“The Malay electorate will say they (the Malay government) have failed, so the opposition must make that an issue,” he was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.
Responding to this, Raduan said Thomas should not stir up racist sentiments.
"MPN sternly warns Thomas not to take advantage or cause enmity between the different races in our beloved country by making seditious and racist remarks.
"Painting the government of the day as a government dominated by a certain race is very inaccurate because the government is backed by various races, represented by MCA, MIC and parties representing other communities of Sabah and Sarawak," he said.
MPN president Raduan Che RoseHe added that Thomas' remarks hurt Malaysians who just celebrated Malaysia Day.
He said racist behaviour shown by Thomas or anyone else must be opposed by those who love peace.
Remarking on Putrajaya's performance, he said 8.9 percent gross domestic product growth in the second quarter, clearly shows that the government is healing the economy following the Covid-19 pandemic.
He added that this shows that the government is also on the right track with its policies to boost investor confidence locally and abroad.
The MPN president said there were many other indicators that the government is on track for economic recovery. - Mkini
