Probe Into Fatal Hit And Run Case Put On Fast Track

(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Police will expedite investigations into a senior police officer suspected of being involved in a hit-and-run accident outside an Ipoh school in which a 17-year-old student was killed yesterday.
Perak police chief Yusri Hassan Basri said the decision to fast-track the probe was taken to facilitate a prosecution in the case, Bernama reported.
“The suspect is remanded for three days starting today. We will complete the investigation as soon as possible and hand it over to the deputy public prosecutor,” he told reporters after visiting the victim’s family in Taman Chepor Sentosa here today.
The victim, Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie, 17, a student of SMK Jati, was a candidate for the SPM examination. He died after his motorcycle was hit at about 12.30pm by a car driven by a 44-year-old man working at the Kedah police headquarters.
Ipoh police chief Yahaya Hassan said yesterday that the boy died of chest and abdomen injuries while the driver, a senior police officer, was not injured.
Yusri said police are looking at the closed-circuit television recordings around the scene of the accident and obtaining footage from dashboard cameras.
“We will investigate from various angles and there will be no compromise or protection for any party. Our commitment is to conduct a transparent investigation to ensure justice for all,” he said.
Separately, home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail offered his condolences to the teenager’s family and urged the family to allow the police space and time to investigate the case.
“I believe the police will carry out their duties responsibly and professionally,” he said after visiting the Tawau police headquarters Sabah. - FMT
