Cops Confirm Probe Into Kit Siang S Non Malay Pm Remark
Police said they will take Lim Kit Siang’s statement after he commented that a non-Malay could become the prime minister.PETALING JAYA: Bukit Aman has confirmed that it will take the statement of DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, following comments he made on his blog about whether a non-Malay can become the prime minister.
CID deputy director Rosdi Isa said Lim had touched upon constitutional issues.
“Lim’s statement will be taken on Dec 13 by the classified criminal investigation unit.
“The case is under investigation and the public is advised not to speculate in any way that could affect the process,” he said in a statement.
In a separate statement earlier today, Lim said he has been accused of provocation when he said the Federal Constitution does not bar a non-Malay from being the prime minister.
“There was no such intention. The constitution is not a provocative document, (and is) the basis on which Malaysian unity must be founded,” he said.
In a speech to Malaysian students in the UK last month, the former Iskandar Puteri MP said he hoped Malaysia would not have to wait as long as the US to have a leader from an ethnic minority.
He was referring to former US president Barack Obama, who was elected to the White House some 230 years after independence.
Lim said Malaysians, regardless of race, must share a Malaysian dream and not a mono-ethnic dream. However, he admitted that it was unlikely that a non-Malay will become the prime minister in the next 100 years.
“Why was it possible to provide in 1957 in the Malayan Constitution, and later in 1963 in the Malaysian Constitution, that a non-Malay could become a prime minister and not be regarded as ‘provocative’, but six decades later, it becomes ‘provocative’ to explain what is in the constitution?” he said.
Last week, Lim confirmed that the police had called him in for questioning over the speech he made in the UK.
Umno Supreme Council member Hasmuni Hassan was among those who criticised Lim and said his remarks were hurtful to the Malays. - FMT
