Probe Cop For Roughing Up Rally Goer Youth Group Urges Police

 The youth group Mandiri accuses the police of trying to distract from the real issue by claiming the policeman was taking preventive action over a lit flare.

Police previously said it was investigating the incident, said to have stemmed from the lighting of a flare, for use of criminal force against a public servant, the letting off of fireworks, and insulting behaviour.
Mandiri coordinator Hamdin Nordin claimed that a certain Inspector Zulkefar had roughed up student-activist Ahsanul Akmal although he posed no threat to public safety or provocation.
Hamdin also accused the police of trying to distract from the real issue at hand by saying that the inspector wanted to take preventive action over the flare.
“What’s worse is that the police took an hour to give the name and badge number of the officer involved, and even accused participants of hurting their personnel.
“We demand an immediate investigation into Inspector Zulkefar for the offences of abuse of power and use of force against rally goers,” he said in a statement.
Hamdin also called for all policemen to be required to wear body cameras while on duty so that evidence can be provided to refute claims involving any incident, like yesterday’s anti-graft rally.
He also urged Putrajaya to bring back the proposed Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission introduced in 2020, which has been replaced with the Independent Police Conduct Commission.
Civil society groups had claimed that the IPCC, meant to be an independent oversight commission for police conduct, was a watered down version of the IPCMC and lacked the authority to hold the police accountable. - FMT
