Press Groups Condemn Attack On Veteran Journo Want Urgent Action
Two media groups today denounced the alleged assault on veteran journalist Haresh Deol, stressing that the intimidation of media workers erodes the press freedom that a democratic nation must uphold.
Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm) and the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) said any form of violence against media practitioners must be viewed with utmost seriousness.
Haresh, co-founder of Twentytwo13 and deputy president of the National Press Club Malaysia, claimed in an X update today that he was assaulted by two individuals, one of whom also recorded the incident.
He has since lodged a police report following the incident. His wife, journalist Pearl Lee, said the incident is a first in Haresh’s 25-year career in the media.
“The co-founder and editor @Twentytwo13news, my colleague and partner @HareshDeol was attacked this afternoon in Bangsar, KL. This is a first in his 25 year career as a journalist. May there be justice!!!” Lee posted on her X account.
Geramm said it views the assault as a threat to the media and an attack on the nation’s journalistic freedom.

“Acts of violence and attempts to intimidate journalists in the course of their professional work are uncivilised and run contrary to the principles of media freedom guaranteed in a democratic system.
“A physical attack on a journalist not only endangers the individual’s safety but also undermines the public’s right to receive accurate and pressure-free information,” said the group in a statement today.
Geramm also demanded that the police probe the incident immediately, and stressed that urgent action must be taken to safeguard the safety of media personnel when reporting on matters of public interest.
“(We urge the police to) investigate this incident immediately and transparently, including identifying the motive and the individuals involved.”
Geramm also called upon all parties, including political leaders and the general public, to respect the role of journalists as providers of information, and not make them targets of threats or attacks.

Malaysian Media CouncilMeanwhile, MMC reminded the public that the safety of media practitioners is fundamental to a free and responsible press.
“Incidents that obstruct or intimidate journalists have direct implications on the public’s right to accurate, timely, and pressure-free information. Undermining the ability of journalists to report freely ultimately affects the public interest.
“We stand in solidarity with Haresh Deol and with all journalists who continue to serve the public with dedication and courage,” MMC added.
In pursuit
Brickfields police chief, Hoo Chang Hook, confirmed receiving Haresh’s report when contacted by Malaysiakini.
“As a result of the incident, the victim sustained injuries to his face, hands, and body after falling while attempting to escape. The suspects have not yet been identified, and the police continue to pursue and trace them.
“The investigating officer will apply for an OTI (order to investigate) from the deputy public prosecutor on Nov 26, to obtain permission to conduct further investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code,” Hoo said in a statement.
He also called on members of the public with information regarding the incident to contact the investigating officer, Adnan Alias, at 019-2162272, the Brickfields district police hotline at 03-2297 9222, the Kuala Lumpur contingent police hotline at 03-2115 9999, or any neighbouring police stations. - Mkini
