PETALING JAYA: Elected representatives across the divide have paid tribute to Umno’s Ayer Kuning assemblyman, Ishsam Shahruddin, following his sudden passing this evening.
Perak menteri besar Saarani Mohamad led the expressions of sympathy on social media, saying he had lost a friend.
“Let us all pray that his soul is blessed with mercy and placed among the righteous,” said Saarani, who is also the Perak Umno chairman.
MIC deputy president M Saravanan said Ishsam’s demise was a loss for the people of Tapah, as he had always worked hard for his constituents in his short-lived tenure as an assemblyman.
PAS Youth deputy chief Hafez Sabri said he was saddened by the death of Ishsam, whom he described as a jovial friend “who was always one to lighten the mood by making jokes”.
“Personally, I had a very good relationship with him. He would always ask how I was doing and take part in some banter with me whenever we met.
“My condolences to his family and friends,” said Hafez, the Manjoi assemblyman.
Bersih chairman Faisal Abdul Aziz also paid tribute to the late assemblyman, saying he was a friendly politician who was always open to different opinions.
“He was committed to realising the agenda of reforms. He was previously also a member of the cross-party democratic caucus supervised by Bersih and the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs.
“He was supposed to be a panellist at a Bersih forum in Ipoh tomorrow night, but God had already set his destiny. My condolences to his family,” he said.
Ishsam had collapsed at the City Stadium in George Town, Penang, after taking part in a friendly football match. He was rushed to Penang Hospital where he was confirmed dead at 6.28pm.
A former professional footballer, Ishsam won the Malaysia FA Cup with Perak in 1990 and also represented the national team.
He was elected as the Ayer Kuning assemblyman in the 2022 general election, winning the seat in a five-cornered contest with a 2,213-vote majority ahead of his closest contender, Amanah’s Nazri Hashim. - FMT
