Police have summoned three Malaysiakini journalists to give their statements tomorrow, over an article claiming that the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters is planning a major reshuffle of its top leadership.
Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the session will be held at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters at 2.30pm.
“At this juncture, police have recorded a statement from the person who lodged the report and further investigations will be carried out,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.
On Tuesday, Malaysiakini published an article on Bukit Aman allegedly planning a major reshuffle involving its top officers including Deputy Inspector-General Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.
Following this, Razarudin issued a statement where he described the speculations as “untrue” as the federal police headquarters had not issued an official statement on the matter.
Penal Code, CMA
Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa later said that police are also investigating the article after a Bukit Aman officer lodged a police report on the matter.
According to Rusdi, the case is being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.
The New Straits Times quoted Razarudin urging the media to avoid publishing news with questionable authenticity.
“The development of technology has led to the emergence of various media, including portals, resulting in competition over ‘who’ publishes the news first.
“However, we advise the public, especially the media, to ensure that reported news comes from relevant parties involved in the issue, rather than citing ‘sources’ whose authenticity is unknown.
“This has happened frequently recently, such as the murder case of Nur Farah Kartini (Abdullah) and the issues concerning the management and internal affairs of the country’s police force,” he said.
Razarudin added that police would not hesitate to take action if news published was found to be malicious or defamatory.
The top police officer however admitted that it is crucial for the media and police to cooperate closely in reporting cases and police achievements. - Mkini
