Pm Willing To Plug Anti Hopping Loophole Reminds Pn It S Their Fault
PARLIAMENT | Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today signalled he was willing to plug a loophole in the anti-hopping law, where rebel MPs get to keep their seats if they are sacked from their party.
However, Anwar reminded Perikatan Nasional that it is their own fault that the loophole exists.
“If (an amendment) is brought forward... I will propose for it (law) to be made whole; I have no problem.
“But it must be remembered, the one that blocked (the sacking clause) are those on that side (the opposition),” he told Parliament today.
He was responding to a query by Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu) on whether the anti-hopping loophole would be plugged.
In its current form, the anti-hopping law strips an MP of their seat if they quit the party they’re in or join another party.
When the law was being formulated, Anwar said Pakatan Harapan’s stance was that those who are sacked should also be disqualified.
However, PN representatives who partook in forming the law objected to this.
Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin had previously attested to this as well.
Anwar said today that due to PN’s objections, the current form of the anti-hopping law was the best that could be achieved at that point, and thus he agreed to it.
Despite this, Putrajaya has not yet made any moves to plug the loophole.
Instead, Anwar has benefited from it, as six former Bersatu MPs - who were disqualified as party members for supporting the prime minister - are now on his side.
