Pixel 6a Sparks Safety Concerns After Latest Fire Incident
Concern Grows Over Pixel 6A Fire Incidents Following Software Update
In a troubling development, yet another Pixel 6A user has reported that their device ignited, with the incident occurring shortly after the application of Google’s latest battery performance update. This update was designed to address prior overheating concerns, as highlighted by Android Authority. A Reddit user shared alarming details of the event, stating they awoke to a “horrible smell and a loud noise,” only to find their smartphone ablaze while charging on a nightstand beside them.
The Redditor reported that the Pixel 6A was connected to a 45W charger typically used for a Steam Deck during the fire. This dangerous situation led to the melting of the phone’s screen and casing. In their post, user u/footymanageraddict mentioned, “The phone was positioned less than 40 cm from my head.” The fire not only scorched the device but also ignited bed sheets and caused superficial damage to a nearby air conditioning unit. The user described suffering throat irritation throughout the day due to inhaling harmful fumes from the incident.
While Google has yet to issue a response to inquiries regarding this serious matter, the company has faced scrutiny following several reports of Pixel 6A devices catching fire earlier this year. In response, Google implemented a mandatory software update designed to decrease both battery capacity and charging efficiency after 400 charge cycles. Additionally, the tech giant began offering free battery replacements for eligible devices.
The Reddit user mentioned that although they installed the required update, a lack of walk-in replacement options in their country forced them to forgo a battery replacement, relying instead on the option to mail in their device.
According to Android Authority, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a warning last week regarding Pixel 6A smartphones. The organization advised customers that an overheating battery poses a significant risk of fire and/or burns, stating that there have been incidents resulting in serious burn injuries.
As concerns about the Pixel 6A’s safety continue to rise, users are urged to remain vigilant and assess their devices’ performance, especially following recent software updates.
