Ph Leaders Back Police Probes Into Threats Against Chief Justice

The PH presidential council, comprising leaders of PKR, Amanah, DAP and Upko, has urged Umno leaders to stop their attacks.PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan’s leaders have come out in support of actions taken by the police to investigate and apprehend those who had made threats against chief justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat.
Tengku Maimun heads the Federal Court bench hearing an appeal by former prime minister Najib Razak against his conviction and sentence in the SRC International corruption case.
The PH presidential council said it was shocked and disappointed by recent statements made by top Umno leaders which could be construed as attacks on the judiciary.
“These attacks, especially from Umno supporters and ‘cybertroopers’, are increasingly threatening, including death threats against the chief justice (Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat).

“Threats to injure or kill are criminal offences under the law and the Penal Code. Therefore, PH supports the inspector-general of police’s statement that those who threaten to injure or kill the chief justice will be investigated and brought to justice,” it said in a statement.
The council comprises PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook, and Upko president Wilfred Madius Tangau.
They said attacks against the chief justice were becoming more common especially when Najib’s appeal process was nearing its end.
It insisted that the independence of the judicial institution must be maintained at all times and that the institution must remain consistent as one of the main pillars of the country.
“We also issue a stern warning that the leaders of the political parties, especially Umno, need to stop these attacks on the judiciary and allow the appeal process to be completed,” it said.
Police announced earlier today that a 30-year-old man had been arrested over threats made against Tengku Maimun. The suspect is being investigated under the Sedition Act.
It was also previously reported that Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani had ordered Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department to probe threats made against the chief justice. - FMT
