Performance Not Matching High Salaries Is Pos Malaysia Getting Raw Deal With Senior Mgmt Wages

“YOU get what you pay for” is a simple enough an adage to understand.
It simply means that the quality of a product or service usually corresponds to its price. In other words, a lower price often indicates a lower quality while a higher price may suggest better quality.
This saying suggests that it is unrealistic to expect a high-quality product or service at a very low cost.
But a couple of netizens questioned if this adage applied to Pos Malaysia when highlighting the wages paid to its senior management.

Setahun @posmalaysia rugi RM200Juta tapi gaji senior management RM900ribu-RM850ribu sebulan, biar betul Pos Malaysia, patot Pos Malaysia contohi @MAS letak CEO orang Malaysia dah 3 tahun syarikat untung, ni letak bangsa asing bukan untung tapi rugi setiap tahun… https://t.co/GwCoy38vqP

Firstly, financially-savvy Haziq Ajik (@haziqrazak92) pointed out that Pos Malaysia posts losses up to RM200 mil annually yet it is paying fat salaries to its top five senior management staff (in the range of RM850,000 to RM1.35 mil per annum each).
He contended that Pos Malaysia should follow the example of national airline MAS which has since appointed locals in senior positions yet has managed to turnaround by posting a profit in just three years.
He was reacting to a post by finfluencer Syahir (@syahirsyhr) who questioned just how much Pos Malaysia was paying its CEO – Charles Brewer. Syahir went on to lament that surely there was local talent that can steer important Malaysian organisations.

Editor’s Note: British national Brewer who has been serving as Pos Malaysia Group CEO since Aug 1, 2021 has come under scrutiny by netizens after the national postal and parcel service provider saw its net loss widening to RM202.7 mil in FY2024, a significant jump from RM157.9 mil in FY2023.

Apart from this marking the sixth consecutive year of losses for Pos Malaysia, Brewer has been dealt with bad press in recent times following his deemed ‘arrogant’ response to the viral post by a postman who shared that customers have complained about his torn uniform on an internal employee engagement platform.
Brewer has since apologised to the mailman for making a derogatory remark of “count yourself lucky that you don’t work for one of the foreign carriers that don’t provide uniforms at all”.

In fact, some a number of commenters echoed similar concerns as Haziq Ajik and Syahir whereby the high wages are not reflected in financial results.
One disgruntled netizen posited that Pos Malaysia would somehow end up with foreigners at the helm while ignoring local talent.

Another commenter was astonished that certain companies could keep paying foreign CEOs massive salaries despite the organisation posting huge losses annually.

Regarding the comparisons with MAS, one netizen though begged to differ by highlighting that MAS enjoyed massive government support and bailouts.

A few netizens argued that Pos Malaysia was no longer relevant in the modern landscape. The advent of competitor courier services was the reason Pos Malaysia was haemorrhaging money.

Regardless of nationality, shouldn’t there be targets be in place for Pos Malaysia’s senior management team? Their job is to turn things round amid stiff competition. Failure to do so should NOT be rewarded with fat contracts.
At the moment, it does seem that Pos Malaysia is NOT getting what it paid for. – Focus Malaysia
