Pendang Mp S Pantun Mocking Dap Sparks Uproar In Dewan Rakyat
PARLIAMENT | The Pendang MP’s move to follow in the footsteps of RSN Rayer (Harapan-Jelutong) and wax lyrical in the Dewan Rakyat has caused an uproar as several MPs reacted in anger to his Malay pantun (poem) mocking DAP.
Awang Hashim, in his 4-line pantun, alluded to DAP being a party without integrity, which prompted Rayer to raise his objection with Chong Zhemin (Harapan-Kampar) dan S Kesavan (Harapan-Sungai Siput) also standing up to back him.
They described Awang’s pantun as disrespectful and urged deputy speaker Mohd Shahar Abdullah to order the Perikatan Nasional leader to retract it.
“Jelutong started off with a pantun, so I take it as an invite to respond with one as well.
"Segala demi perjuangan mendapat harta dan kuasa,
Segala maki hamun sudah menjadi suci,
Itulah perjuangan DAP kini dan semasa,
Hilanglah segala prinsip dan integriti," he said today.
(All struggles for the sake of wealth and power,
All insults and slander now seem pure,
This is DAP’s fight, now and forever,
All principles and integrity disappear.)
Awang (above) was meant to present his supplementary question during the finance minister’s turn to respond in the oral question and answer session.
Do it with decorum
In calling for Awang to retract his “rude” pantun, Rayer criticised the PAS lawmaker for not having the manners to do it right.
Jelutong MP RSN Rayer“One may recite a pantun, but with decorum. Previously, Muhyiddin (Yassin) said PAS was a deviant party.
“I request the pantun be withdrawn,” the DAP lawmaker said.
However, Awang defended his pantun, asserting that it did not name any individual in the Dewan Rakyat.
“I did not mention any individual’s name, only a party’s name. Why can’t I?” Awang questioned.
In response, Chong rebuked Awang, stating that it was inappropriate to name any party and make such accusations.
Kampar MP Chong ZheminThe tension prompted the deputy speaker to intervene, calling on MPs to remain calm.
Shahar described Awang’s remark as merely a pantun and not directed at any specific quarter.
“Pendang only intended to recite a pantun, not to target any party.
“Both sides should take this more calmly and objectively,” he said, easing the situation.
Shahar then asked Awang to proceed with his supplementary question. - Mkini
