(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Tiong King Sing has downplayed the possibility of an immediate merger between his party and Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB).
“Wait. Calm down. (It’s) engagement first before marriage. Stage by stage,” he told reporters when asked whether the memorandum of understanding signed between the two parties today meant that PSB members would be absorbed into PDP.
Tiong also said the MoU was not something “sudden” and had been in the works for “a year plus”.
Earlier today, Tiong and PSB president Wong Soon Koh signed the MoU on the two parties’ collaboration for “the sake of stability, solidarity and unity”.
During the MoU signing ceremony, PSB stated its support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg “in the spirit of unity”.
Wong said PSB had decided to set aside differences and rally behind the premier and prime minister to enable the two leaders to accomplish what they had set out to do for the country.
On whether Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) would campaign for Barisan National and Pakatan Harapan in the upcoming six state elections, Tiong said the ruling coalition’s chairman Abang Johari would make a decision “tomorrow night”.
Earlier this month, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged GPS leaders to help in the election campaigns of its federal coalition partners at the coming state polls.
His request came a week after GPS parliamentary chief Fadillah Yusof said the Sarawak ruling coalition would remain neutral and not take part in any election campaign.
Malaysians in six states will head to the polls on Aug 12, with early voting set for Aug 8.
Nominations of candidates in Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu will be held on July 29. - FMT
