PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin should consider redistributing leadership roles in the coalition as Bersatu’s hold over key positions could create discord in the opposition pact, says PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin.
Hashim said he previously highlighted that PAS, which governs four states and has strong grassroots support across the country, should be given appropriate roles or positions within PN, reported Utusan Malaysia.
He added that appointments to key posts require careful consideration, expressing hope that certain changes could be made to “satisfy all parties”.
“I believe PAS members are also not entirely pleased with the current situation, where key PN positions are dominated by Bersatu,” he said.
“For example, if the PN chairman is from Bersatu, the deputy chairmanship should be given to PAS, but even this has not happened.”
Hashim previously challenged the notion that Muhyiddin should remain PN’s prime minister candidate after he said that a PAS leader should lead the coalition, citing its larger parliamentary representation and stronger grassroots network.
In its report today, Utusan Malaysia said the resignation of PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as PN treasurer on Dec 15 was seen as a protest by PAS against Bersatu’s control over key positions in the coalition.
Samsuri’s resignation came after the PN Supreme Council confirmed on Dec 9 that several Bersatu leaders had been appointed to top posts in PN, including Azmin Ali as PN secretary-general.
Samsuri, the Terengganu menteri besar, dismissed claims of a rift in PN but declined to specify if his resignation had been voluntary.
In a Facebook post yesterday, Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz said the party had never sidelined PAS or any other component when appointing key positions in PN.
He said Muhyiddin discussed the matter with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, demonstrating the commitment of the Bersatu leader to safeguarding the interests of all parties in the coalition.
“Before the PN Supreme Council meeting, there was a one-on-one discussion between the Bersatu president and the PAS president,” he said.
“Certainly, discussions took place to address matters related to PAS, including the allocation of PAS’s key positions in PN and the relationship between the two parties.” - FMT
