Pas Remains Unfazed By Bersatu Mps Switching Support
PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari dismissed a suggestion from an Umno veteran for PAS to take over leadership of Perikatan Nasional.PETALING JAYA: The opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional will not be affected if more of its MPs switch support to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, a PAS leader said today.
Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, who is PAS information chief, said PN still enjoys strong support from the voters.
“In Malaysia’s political system, the most important thing is the support from the people at elections. If dozens more MPs switch support, but the support from the voters for PN continues to rise, there is no problem,” Fadhli said in a posting on Facebook today.
PAS and Bersatu are partners in PN, which has 68 seats in the Dewan Rakyat. However, six MPs from Bersatu have thrown their support behind Anwar, on grounds that their constituencies need development funds.
Yesterday, Umno veteran Shahrir Samad suggested that PAS (which has 43 seats to Bersatu’s 25) should take over leadership of PN, whose chairman is Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.
Shahrir said Bersatu had become unstable as some party members were unhappy with Muhyiddin after his U-turn over his decision to step down.
In response, Fadhli said: “Thanks for your suggestion, but it is quite strange when the passengers of a sinking ship are worried about another ship in full sail.”
On Jan 24, Tanjung Karang MP Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi became the sixth MP from Bersatu to pledge support for Anwar. The other Bersatu MPs who have backed Anwar are Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang) and Zahari Kechik (Jeli). - FMT
