Machang Mp Faces Six Month Suspension For Citing Anonymous Letter
The Prime Minister’s Department is slated to table a motion in the Dewan Rakyat tomorrow to suspend Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal for six months.
This is for citing an anonymous letter during parliamentary debates on July 1, that purportedly maligns civil servants under the department using unverified information.
The motion states, among others, that “The Machang MP has issued a statement and allegation that is serious and stirs anti-government sentiments.
“Therefore, it is agreed that the Machang MP should be suspended from the meeting and select committees for six months from the date this motion is approved.”
The motion is listed as the government’s first order of business tomorrow after question time in the morning, according to the Dewan Rakyat’s order paper for the day’s proceedings.
During the debates on July 1, Wan Fayhsal (above) quoted a letter that named an officer in the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) as the purported “mastermind” of the plan to privatise Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd and portrayed the officer in a negative light.
By bringing attention to the letter and its unverified information, however, the motion states that Wan Fayhsal has badly affected not just the named individual but also other EPF officers maligned by “baseless” accusations.
The motion also states that MPs’ speeches “cannot mention the actions or character of any government officer except his conduct when carrying out his duties as a government officer”.
An aide to Wan Fayhsal said the MP will be holding a press conference tomorrow once the motion has been tabled in Parliament. - Mkini
