The prime minister says he will voice the country's solidarity with Palestine at the Asean summit in Kuala Lumpur next month.

(Bernama pic)PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will reiterate the country’s stand on the issue of Gaza and the attack on Qatar by Israel with US president Donald Trump at the Asean Summit next month
Anwar made this commitment at the Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit in Doha, Qatar, Bernama reported.
“In the meeting with President Trump, we will use the occasion to urge him to understand Malaysia’s clear and firm stance in the pursuit of justice, including for Gaza and Palestine,” he said at a press conference in Doha.
He said as Asean chair, Malaysia’s solidarity with the people of Palestine will also be raised at the meeting in order to draw the attention of major world leaders.
In addition to Trump, Chinese president Xi Jinping, Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and South African president Cyril Ramaphosa are among the world leaders expected to attend the 47th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur.
The prime minister attended the extraordinary summit at the invitation of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as an immediate response to the Israeli attack on Doha on Sept 9.
Anwar said Malaysia’s participation in the summit demonstrated the unity of Islamic and Arab nations in strongly condemning Israel’s actions and in expressing full solidarity with Qatar.
Earlier, in delivering Malaysia’s statement at the summit, Anwar reiterated that Israel’s decision to “rain bombs” on Qatar’s capital was an assault on its sovereignty and a violation of international law.
He said the strike on Qatar was a blatant sabotage against peace in view of the country’s role as a key mediator in the Gaza conflict.
“This attack must be regarded as an attack against us all. It is a calculated assault where no nation is to be spared in pursuit of the Israeli Zionist design,” he said.
Israeli defence forces had carried out a strike on the Leqtaifiya district in Doha on Sept 9 targeting the leadership of Hamas, said to be housed in a Qatari government residential complex.
Anwar also called for severe punitive measures to be taken against Israel for its continued oppression of the Palestinian people and violation of international law by attacking many countries.
Anwar stressed that the world, particularly Arab countries, must sever all diplomatic and trade relations with Israel.
“Severe punitive actions must be put in place. Diplomatic engagements must cease and so must trade relations,” he said. - FMT
