PKR vice-president R Ramanan has expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim after being appointed as a full minister overseeing human resources.
“On behalf of the Indian community in the country, I would also like to say ‘nandri’ (Tamil for thank you) to the prime minister for granting me this honour and mandate,” he said in a statement today.
Ramanan’s promotion from deputy entrepreneur development and cooperatives minister to full minister ends the controversy over the absence of a Tamil-speaking representative in Anwar’s cabinet, following the removal of former human resources minister V Sivakumar in December 2023.
Previously, critics had highlighted that it was the first time in Malaysian history that there was no Tamil-speaking minister.
Ramanan further acknowledged the significant responsibility of ensuring that the national workforce development agenda is strengthened comprehensively, inclusively, and competitively, in line with the aspirations of Madani Malaysia.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the new cabinet lineup earlier“I will carry out this duty and responsibility with full dedication and commitment to fulfil the hopes of Malaysians, including the Indian community, and also for the country, in line with the Madani Malaysia vision,” he added.
He also thanked members of the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry, noting the strong support he had received during his tenure as deputy minister.
In the last general election, Ramanan defeated then-BN heavyweight Khairy Jamaluddin in the contest for the Sungai Buloh parliamentary seat.
Ramanan was formerly a member of MIC and had served in various roles in the party, including as treasurer-general.
During the PKR election in May, Ramanan, who won the vice-presidency, had also backed Anwar’s daughter Nurul Izzah in her successful bid to oust incumbent deputy president Rafizi Ramli.
He had expressed confidence that under Nurul Izzah, PKR could win between 70 to 80 parliamentary seats in the next general election. - Mkini
