A global non-profit media organisation, Project Syndicate said its Forward Thinkers list is aimed at recognising and elevating a new generation of intellectual trailblazers.
Featuring 30 influential figures from academia, policy, civil society, and the private sector, the list highlights individuals addressing some of today’s most pressing issues – from climate change and geopolitics to the future of capitalism and the health of liberal democracy.
“Each participant is a leader in their field, and we believe their insight will not only shape public discourse within their respective countries but also have a growing impact on the global stage in the years to come,” said Project Syndicate on its website.
Among others on the list are economics professors from Harvard University (Oleg Itskhoki) and Yale University (Marina Halac), and law professors from the University of Chicago (Aziz Huq) and HEC Paris (Alberto Alemanno).
University of Oxford public policy professor Yeling Tan and Council on Foreign Relations’ senior fellow for China Studies Zongyuan Zoe Liu are other notable names on the list.
Project Syndicate said the list was carefully chosen by its editors with the aim of showcasing voices they believe would help shape and illuminate political debates in the years to come.
Project Syndicate started distributing commentary and analysis on a wide range of international issues in the early 1990s, and its commentaries have been published 16,904 times around the world last year.
Nurul Izzah, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s daughter, is the chairman of two think tanks – the Social Economic Research Initiative (Seri) and Polity.
The social policy activist was a three-term MP but lost her Permatang Pauh seat in a shock defeat to PAS’s Fawwaz Jan in the 2022 general election.
Nurul Izzah entered politics after Anwar’s 1998 sacking as deputy prime minister and his subsequent jailing, which sparked the “Reformasi” movement and paved the way for the establishment of Parti Keadilan Nasional, the forerunner of PKR. - FMT
