Nurul Izzah Can Save Pkr From Someone Incapable Says Hassan In Support
Ahead of official nominations for the PKR central election, a party veteran has hinted that “right-thinking” members are behind a wave of endorsements for vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar to contest the deputy presidency.
Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim described Nurul Izzah, the eldest daughter of Prime Minister and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, as a factor that can save the party from ending up “with an unsuitable candidate” for the number two post.
“There are many rational, right-thinking PKR members who are fearful that the deputy president’s post will fall to someone who is incapable,” Hassan told Malaysiakini.
However, he declined to elaborate when asked, stating, “Let my statement be ambiguous”.
Saifuddin to enter fray?
So far, no candidate has publicly announced a bid to challenge incumbent deputy president Rafizi Ramli, but Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail is rumoured to be aiming for the post and had admitted to meetings with Rafizi and Anwar, to discuss his future in the party.

Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution IsmailNurul Izzah’s name as a potential contender emerged today after an initial endorsement by Perak PKR information chief Azam Afandi, followed by a series of declarations of support from various levels.
They include Anwar’s senior political secretary, Shamsul Iskandar Akin, who led five out of six Malacca PKR divisions in backing Nurul Izzah.
‘Let her fight for it’
On his personal support for Nurul Izzah, Hassan maintained that he has consistently opposed any form of cronyism and nepotism in government or in the party.
“I am someone who opposes cronyism in government and in PKR. But I am prepared to be at the front line to defend Nurul Izzah’s right to offer herself as a candidate for deputy president.
“Her right should not be denied simply because she is the daughter of Anwar, PKR president and the current prime minister of Malaysia,” said Hassan, who recently announced his retirement as PKR Pasir Gudang chief at the party’s divisional polls.

Nurul Izzah AnwarADS“PKR can avoid division and chaos if Nurul Izzah is willing to contest for the deputy presidency. Both Rafizi’s supporters and Anwar loyalists greatly respect and are comfortable with her.
“Therefore, I give my endorsement and support for Nurul Izzah to accept this historic challenge - not only to lead PKR but also the Malaysian people who yearn for change,” he said.
Adding further, Hassan said the party would have an interesting moment if Nurul Izzah entered the contest for number two.
He said the former Permatang Pauh MP is a capable leader and believed that she can win on her own merit.
“Let Nurul Izzah win the position through open competition, whether it’s a straight fight or a three-cornered contest.
“A tough competition would ensure that no one can claim Nurul Izzah was chosen as deputy president through cronyism,” he said. - Mkini
