Now Saravanan Says Maids Will Not Get Rm1 500 Minimum Wage
Under a memorandum of understanding signed with Indonesia, Putrajaya agreed that these maids will get at least RM1,500 in salary.PETALING JAYA: Human resources minister M Saravanan today announced that the RM1,500 minimum wage does not apply to domestic workers. However, he did not provide any specific reason for the exclusion.
In a statement, Saravanan provided the terms of the implementation on the Minimum Wages Order 2022, which was officially gazetted on April 27.
One of the terms stated that the new minimum wage, which takes effect from May 1, only applies to companies which have five or more employees.
Saravanan said that companies that had fewer than five workers, as well those which offered professional services, would be given leeway until Jan 1, 2023 before having to implement the RM1,500 minimum wage ruling as well.
Human resources minister M Saravanan. He said the flexibility was given to enable such employers to make the necessary preparations.
On the domestic workers salary, the announcement today contradicts Saravanan’s own statement earlier this month when he said that they would be paid the new minimum wage as well.
On April 13, Saravanan was reported to have said that Indonesian domestic workers would not be paid anything lower than the minimum wage that is enforced at the time of their employment in Malaysia.
He was referring to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Putrajaya and the Indonesian government for the better protection of maids.
According to a copy of the MoU sighted by FMT, employers have to pay domestic workers “not less than RM1,500” directly into the workers’ bank accounts no later than the seventh day of the following month.
Indonesian ambassador to Malaysia, Hermono, had also gone on record to state that Indonesian maids should get RM1,500 under the MoU. - FMT
