Nothing Great About Unearthing Vision 2020 Time Capsule It Only Epitomises Tun M S Landmark Failure
MADANI government backers have mocked the much ado about twice former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad opening the Vision 2020 time capsule that he had personally planted 28 years ago in Menara Kuala Lumpur.
Leading the chorus is JOKER (@tjerealjoker) who lamented wasting his time witnessing revelation of the time capsule’s content yesterday (April 13) in conjunction with the “Celebrate Raya with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad” event organised by Kuala Lumpur Tower Sdn Bhd.
“We thought it was a time capsule. But apparently it was a waste of time,” fumed the digital creator.
“Grandpa keeps brochures, cassettes, videotapes and various rubbish in the capsule. There’s absolutely no significance. There’s absolutely no benefit to the rakyat …Wasted 29 years. Wasted an hour watching. FAIL”
Quite a few commenters felt that they, too, were “scammed” into watching the live event on TikTok.

Another commenter could not agree better as he described the capsule as “evidence of Dr Mahathir’s Vision 2020 failure despite having leaders of his own choice at his disposal”.

In another social media post, self-proclaimed in-house legal adviser Ikhwan (@JatIkhwan) opined that the unveiling of the time capsule’s content ceremony would be “more iconic if PMX @anwaribrahim who was the then deputy prime minister was invited”.
This elicited a sentimental comment from Akhramsyah Sanusi who is the son of the late UMNO veteran and former Kedah menteri besar Tan Sri Sanusi Junid who recalled that he was “still unmarried and studying in the university” when the capsule was planted.
“Now my eldest child has graduated from university and started his career some seven months ago. However, Vision 2020 and the aspirations that correspond to it have not been achieved,” lamented the Pejuang head of research.

“The capsule opening was finally a celebration of the leadership and longevity of @chedetofficial and the respected Tun Siti Hasmah Mohd Mohamad Ali (Dr Mahathir’s wife).
“As a patriotic citizen, I think both of them would be happier if Vision 2020 was achieved even though they might not be there to witness the capsule’s opening which is to celebrate success of the national development plan”.
All in all, five capsules altogether are said to be planted during Dr Mahathir’s first premiership tenure which spanned 22 years from 1981-2003.
The Menara KL capsule buried on Oct 1, 1996 which was supposed to be opened in 2020 but was deferred in view of the COVID-19 pandemic but was finally unveiled to coincide with Dr Mahathir turning a centenarian. It contained various symbolic items that reflected Malaysia’s aspirations and hopes to achieve a developed nation status as outlined in the Vision 2020 agenda.
The second capsule is located at the Sunway Putra Mall site (planted on June 12, 1987 and is expected to be opened in 2087 or 100 years after it was planted); The third capsule at the Rawang Rest and Relax (R&R) stop was planted on September 8, 1994 (said to have contained documents regarding the highway but was not opened in 2018 because the concession was extended); The fourth capsule containing documents on Putrajaya was planted at the Putrajaya landmark on Aug 29, 1995. It was originally planned to be opened in 2020 but was postponed; andThe fifth capsule in Bahasa Malaysia was not planted by Dr Mahathir but by PMX and the late Tun Daim Zainuddin when they held cabinet positions in 1987. – Focus Malaysia
