Only 14 Of Malaysians Feel Govt Cares About Well Being International Poll Finds
Malaysia came in seventh out of the nine Asean countries in the World Risk Poll in terms of feeling that the government cares ‘a lot’ about the people’s well-being.
PETALING JAYA: Only 14% of Malaysian adults feel that the government cares significantly about their well-being, according to an international poll which places the country in the bottom half of a group comprising its Asean neighbours.
Malaysia came in seventh out of the nine Asean countries in the World Risk Poll by Lloyd’s Register Foundation, which is conducted once every two years.
The Philippines came in first with 34%, followed closely by Indonesia (33%).
Some 32% of Singaporeans were of the opinion that their government cared “a lot” about them, while Cambodia and Laos recorded a percentage of 30% and 23% respectively.
Thailand came in sixth with 16% while Vietnam came in eighth with 13%.
In Myanmar, only 7% of the people felt that their government cared “a lot”.
According to the poll, however, some 40% of Malaysians felt that their neighbours cared “a lot” about their well-being.
The country came second to Indonesia, which recorded a percentage of 51%, while the Philippines came third with 35%.
Singapore had the smallest percentage, with just 13% of the people believing that their neighbours cared “a lot” about their well-being.
Benedict Vigers, a research consultant at global analytics firm Gallup, said analysis of the poll showed that millions of adults worldwide felt that their neighbours and governments did not care about them or their well-being “at all”.
“At the same time, billions more do feel cared for, and they are more likely to believe their neighbours care than their government does,” he said.
Vigers also said that in 2023, some 70% of people worldwide said they felt that their neighbours cared about them and their well-being “somewhat” or “a lot”, while 64% said the same about their government.
The latest results are based on interviews with 1,000 citizens aged 15 and above from each country.
Lloyd’s Register Foundation is an independent global charity that promotes safety and education. The World Risk Poll meanwhile is the only global study of worry about, and harm from, risks to people’s safety.
The poll is based on nearly 147,000 interviews conducted by Gallup in 142 countries and territories throughout 2023 and covers places with little to no official data on safety and risk. - FMT
