No Politician Wants A General Election Now And It Is Not Because Of The Corona Virus
Oh boo hoo. I woke up this morning and the country is back to normal again. Let me tell you why.
My wife called the bank this morning for some online transaction queries. The bank (the old sugar-cane bank) recently changed their 'webpage' and it is impossible to make our regular online transactions. (So Malaysia is back to normal). My wife has been handling the account for err..about 20 years. But this time (after the changes in their webpage) the bank girl who answered the phone refused to layan my wife because my wife was listed as a 'user id' and not as 'authoriser'. She asked the 'authoriser' to call. Which my wife did and the same girl answered the phone and continued the conversation like nothing had happened. (So Malaysia is back to normal.)
Then there is a roadblock near our house and I dont think I have an Official Letter from that nasi kandar place in town authorising me to go pick up some kari kambing, ayam kurma and fried fish. And their teh-C kosong. Air liur saya meleleh lah - just talking about it. So Malaysia is back to normal.
Then this weeks political 'crisis' has also seen a quick end to it. It was all hoo haa hoo haa for two days and now its over. Lets see what excitement happens next week. One crisis a week ? Malaysia is back to normal again.
As I said before folks, there is NO POLITICAL CRISIS in the countru. Everyone just go home. I am not saying the government is in great shape - far from it. But there really is no crisis. The government does have a majority in Parliament - no matter how slim it is.
You see it is like this - no matter who forms the government things are not going to change. In fact things may get worse if there is another government.
I already posted the KLCI charts yesterday. Lets look at it again.
Here are 22 months of Dr Mahathir's bungling :
You can see clearly that since Dr Mahathir took over as Prime Minister in February 2018, the KLCI crashed to its lowest levels in years. By the time Dr Mahathir resigned on 24th February 2020 the KLCI had crashed to just below 1,300.
Then Tan Sri Muhyiddin took over as Prime Minister on 29th February 2020. You can see in the chart below that almost immediately the KLCI began moving up. And the KLCI kept moving up even through the Corona Virus and the MCO that came into being on March 18th 2020.
In July 2020 Dr Mahathir began talking about a No Confidence vote. Since then the KLCI has been a little unsteady again.
Hello folks, tuan-tuan, sahabat handai, sahibul samaha, I am NOT making this up. Here is a headline from July 14th 2020 :
Nothing is going to change even if the government changes. If Dr Mahathir becomes Prime Minister again (for the third time) the KLCI will most likely crash again - back to below 1,300.
(And here is some inside information - Dr Mahathir is NOT going to be PM again anytime before the next elections. No only "no one" wants him back as PM but some higher ups dont want him back either. And he has already said he will not be running for Parliament again.)
So even if the government changes there is no guarantee that a new government will do any better. Maybe a new government will do worse.
And here is the real catch - if there is a general election now there are not going to be any clear cut winners. I dont think any single party can win more than 50 Parliamentary seats. Except maybe the DAP. The days of large, single blocs in Parliament are over.
So even if there is a general election any government will have to be a 'weak' coalition. And then there will be the usual frogs and by-elections. It is very likely that the present "weak coalition" situation will not only prevail but it will become a fact of Malaysian politics.
Unless a clear cut winner appears (a single party) that can win say 70 or 80 Parliamentary seats, but that seems unlikely for now.
Some Opposition Parliamentarians and other observers can also see perhaps the futility of having a General Election now. Here are some news reports :
Wong Chen said opposition may discuss working with (PN) . . negotiate for reforms and the budget.
Reforms? What reforms exactly? Positions and a say in government spending aka projects ? But n'theless Wong Chen is prepared to support the Government instead of calling for a general election or a change in Prime Minister.
Here is another report :
several opposition figures offered PM Muhyiddin an alternative.Muar MP proposed a "confidence-and-supply" arrangement.
whereby lawmakers agrees to support government
condition for such arrangement was no general elections until Covid-19 stabilises in a year or two
Again the feeling among Opposition MPs is there is no need to change the government or the PM. They are doing an ok job handling the pandemic.
Perhaps let more time pass to see improvements.
If you ask me the two biggest repair jobs for the country are the economy and education.
And from what I see not much is being done to fix either - the economy and education.
The main reason is because the warped political thinking of the past 50 years is still dominant in Malaysian politics.
The politics of the New Economic Policy. That is why the country is in such a huge problem now. I repeat folks : The New Economic Policy is still very much the dominant political philosophy in Malaysia. Hence we are quite doomed.
Najib, Muhyiddin, Dr Mahathir, Anwar, Hishamuddin Onn were all born and bred not only in the same party UMNO but on the same political philosophy : Dasar Ekonomi Baru.
In his clownish attempt to 'take over the government' recently Brader Anwar insisted that "his government" will be a Muslim majority government.
I think that is obvious lah. There is no need to say so. This is Malaysia. Malays are the majority. But the fact that he emphatically said that was to send a signal to the Malays that the Malay special rights, Dasar Ekonomi Baru, special privileges etc etc will remain intact. The Affirmative Action will remain. Thats what it means.
(Hello Yindian supporters of Brader Anwar - go and ask 'im lar - yif he become the praim ministar of Malaysia will he remove the quota system and allow all qualified Yindian students to enter medical faculty in gomen universities? I say anna, thambi., macha go and ask 'im lar. I think you will be disappointed.)
There is nothing wrong with the Affirmative Action policies for Malays / bumiputras. We need the Affirmative Action for Malays / bumiputras but not at the expense (and suicidal foolishness) of denying other people their opportunities. That is haram. I repeat that is haram.
So whoever is in power or whoever is the prime minister, if they donot make drastic policy changes then this country is doomed.
All the thieving monopolies and oligopolies must be abolished. The elitist oligarchs, the licensed monopolies etc must be abolished. In this country the poor are subsidising the rich.
There is no point changing the government if there are going to be no real changes in policy making. It will be back to square one.
The views expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of MMKtT.
