PETALING JAYA: No police report has yet to be filed against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad following a royal commission of inquiry into the Batu Puteh sovereignty issue, according to federal police.
“The administrative office of the federal criminal investigation department has informed that no police reports have been filed in relation to this case so far,” a Bukit Aman spokesman told FMT.
The royal commission, whose report was declassified last Thursday, had stated that a criminal investigation could be initiated against Mahathir, and recommended that the RCI’s secretary file a police report.
The royal commission held that Mahathir had unilaterally decided not to proceed with the applications to review and interpret the International Court of Justice’s 2008 decision ceding sovereignty over Batu Puteh to Singapore.
It cited communications he had with the solicitor-general, two days before the Cabinet decided on the issue, and the time at which Singapore was officially informed Malaysia would be dropping the legal applications, which was 30 minutes before the Cabinet met.
However, two members of the commission – retired Federal Court judge Zainun Ali and legal expert Faridah Jalil – said Mahathir’s decision not to proceed with the applications merely amounted to dereliction of duty and was not a criminal offence.
In response to the inquiry’s findings, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the report had unveiled weaknesses as well as major treachery committed against Malaysia. He said he will allow the legal process to take place first.
Earlier today, veteran newsman A Kadir Jasin suggested that Putrajaya consider securing compensation for Batu Puteh by leveraging on its good ties with Singapore, instead of just investigating Mahathir. - FMT
