Rantau Panjang MCBA deputy commander Bakri Sulaiman said the figure was recorded over a five-day period between Sept 12 and 16.
He said of the total, 16,704 were inbound travellers, while 20,709 were outbound visitors heading to Thailand.
"On normal days, we record between 3,000 and 4,000 travellers daily at the Rantau Panjang ICQS. However, on Fridays and Saturdays, the figure usually rises to more than 4,000," he said.
Bakri said that on Sept 13 (Saturday), 2,903 arrivals and 4,384 departures were recorded, while on Sept 14 (Sunday), outbound movement rose further to 4,648.
He said the trend reflects Rantau Panjang's position as one of the main border gates for locals and tourists travelling between Malaysia and Thailand, particularly on weekends.
"The surge in cross-border movements at the Malaysia–Thailand border in Rantau Panjang was largely due to the Malaysia Day public holiday and the school holidays.
"MCBA, together with other security agencies, will continue to step up monitoring to ensure smooth operations and the safety of visitors at the checkpoint," he added.
Meanwhile, checks at the ICQS today showed that Malaysian travellers continued to flock to Thailand ahead of the weekend break in Kelantan. Motorists were seen arriving from various districts, including Machang and Tanah Merah. - NST
