Nazlan Will Preside Over Current Criminal Cases Till Completion
High Court Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali will continue presiding over his current cases until they are settled, said the Federal Court Chief Registrar's Office (PKPMP).
The office said this even if the cases continue beyond his transfer date which is effective March 1.
Nazlan, who presided over former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's SRC International trial, is being transferred back to the civil courts.
The judge still has a few other high-profile criminal cases for which hearings have yet to be concluded.
One 1MDB-linked case that is pending before Nazlan's criminal court is the government's US$340 million forfeiture suit against PetroSaudi International Limited and four others.
Other than 1MDB-linked matters, Nazlan is also set to deliver on Feb 3 his end-of-defence decision on former Felda chairperson Mohd Isa Samad's corruption case linked to the purchase of the Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites (MPHS) by Felda Investment Corporation Sdn Bhd (FICSB).
The PKPMP, in a statement reported by Bernama, said the transfer of judges was not unusual.
"Transfers are a normal practice for judges. The transfer of Nazlan to the civil courts is to replace Wong Chee Lin who will be retiring," it said.
Nazlan was previously on the bench at the Commercial High Court before being transferred to the Criminal High Court in July 2018.
On July 28 last year, he became the first judge in Malaysia to hand down a guilty verdict on a former prime minister, in this case, Najib, over seven charges linked to RM42 million from SRC International, a former subsidiary of troubled sovereign wealth fund 1MDB.
He found the former premier guilty of one count of abuse of power, three counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) and three counts of money laundering. - Mkini
