Najib House Arrest Anwar Says Govt Respects Agong S Discretion
The federal government will not question the authority of the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong to decide on former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s house detention, said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Speaking at the PKR special convention earlier today, Anwar said the king has the final say as the Pardons Board chair.
“Our position is clear that any decision made in the Pardons Board, the Agong’s decision, is final.
“Ever since Merdeka until today, there has been no action by the government that goes against the role and power of the Malay rulers, and this we must keep.
“Those who can’t understand the decision, they are not fit to be a political commentator,” he said in his speech at the convention in Shah Alam, which was held in conjunction with PKR's 25th anniversary.
Anwar was commenting on an alleged “addendum order” issued by former Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah in January, and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s affidavit that confirmed the existence of the document.
The prime minister also denied that the government was trying to alter a valid court decision in the Najib case.
The Pardons Board earlier this year halved Najib’s jail sentence in the SRC International case to six years.
It also reduced the fine imposed on the former prime minister from RM210 million to RM50 million after he was found guilty of seven criminal charges related to corruption. - Mkini
