Najib Razak takes questions from his audience during a programme in Kampung Kerinchi, Kuala Lumpur.KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Najib Razak today expressed hope that his four-year rivalry with Dr Mahathir Mohamad would not reach “extreme” levels
“We can have different views, but if we fight, we hope it does not reach extreme levels in our actions,” Najib told some 200 people in Kampung Kerinchi today during a programme
He added that it was not a trait of the Malays to be vindictive
Earlier, he was asked if Mahathir had reached out to him to settle their differences
“So far there has been no signal,” the Pekan MP replied. “But if you want to ask, then you should ask him.”Mahathir, who had supported Najib when he replaced Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in 2009, fell out with Najib in 2015 over his handling of the 1MDB affair
Najib today said there should be no vengeance in their political rivalry
“What will happen to the politics of this country then?”Najib also hit out at Pakatan Harapan after a PKR senator threatened to sack Orang Asli village chiefs in Cameron Highlands if they did not support the ruling coalition in the upcoming by-election there
He claimed BN had never resorted to such practices
At the dialogue today, Najib repeated his criticism of the sales and services tax (SST), adding that prices of goods had been on the rise
“If you look at the economy, the situation in the past eight months is worrying
“Nine years under BN is better than eight months under PH. If BN is given the trust in the next general election, we can be better.”Najib said he was ready to help BN’s campaign in Cameron Highlands
“If they feel I’m not needed I won’t go, but I hear there are many requests for me to go there.”BN is fielding Ramli Mohd Nor, from the Orang Asli community, to contest against PH’s M Manogaran (DAP) and independent candidates Salehuddin Ab Talib and Wong Seng Yee. - FMT
