Na Im Jibed For Prejudicing Muslim Band Member Till Universal Music Removes Dolla S Mv From All Official Platforms

HUMAN rights activist and lawyer Latheefa Koya has taken a pot shot at ‘killjoy’ Religious Affairs Minister Datuk Dr Na’im Mokhtar for threatening to file shariah charges against Wan Sabrina Wan Rosli a.k.a. Sabronzo of all-girls band group Dolla over its latest music video (MV) for allegedly being “too sexy”.
The former chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) further contended that prosecutions – whether civil or shariah – can only be decided by the prosecuting authority after a fair and impartial investigation by the relevant investigative bodies.
Latheefa KoyaAs such, the tirade launched against Wan Sabrina – which received wide applause from conservative Muslims om grounds of erosion of moral value by western elements – has publicly shamed her given she has not been found guilty of any offence.
“He (Na’im) has also prejudiced her fundamental right to a fair investigation and trial,” berated Latheefa on X s09n after Universal Music Malaysia took down the music video for Dolla’s latest song, Question, which had sparked heated reactions from conservatives on social media for the band members’ revealing attire.
“The Minister has no business whatsoever to make such threats. A government minister has no authority to investigate or prosecute citizens.”
The video in question showed the Dolla trio comprising Wan Sabrina, Tabitha Ariel Lam (Tabby) and Angelina Chai (Angel) dressed in halter-neck tops with corset bodices paired with miniskirts and in outfits with bare shoulders and exposed midriffs.
The group formed in 2019 by Universal Music Malaysia was originally a quartet till its fourth member Syasya Rizal (Syasya) left in April 2024.
Universal Music praised
On a bigger picture, the co-founder/adviser of NGO Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) described the entire backlash against Wan Sabrina and her band as “sensationalist and displays a distasteful obsession with female purity while ignoring harmful misogynistic attitudes in society”.
“Anyway, how did the minister decide that this MV was too sexy? Did he watch it? What’s the criteria to decide this? Perhaps he should just have lowered his gaze,” snubbed Latheefa who was also a former PKR central executive committee member.
“It would be best if instead of scrutinising Dolla’s performances, Na’im and his Ministry focus on real problems.
“For example, thousands of children who are denied citizenship just because their parents’ marriage documents are not in order. Isn’t defending innocent children our highest religious duty?”
As many non-Muslim music fans and liberal-minded Muslins retaliated against the censorship mooted by Na’im, the former Shariah Court chief judge has applauded Universal Music Malaysia for bring courteous and responsible by removing Dolla’s MV from all its official platforms.
“Such action reflects the sincerity and sensitivity of the industry towards the voices of the community and the values we cherish together,” he praised in a media statement.
“All of us, whether artists or the general public, are shouldering the responsibility of building an ecosystem that is not only fertile with creativity but also underpinned by manners, politeness and respect in line with the aspirations of a Madani Malaysia.”
The polemic was sparked by opposition-slant celebrity preacher Ustazah Asma’ Harun who publicly ticked off Dolla’s appearance as displayed in its latest MV song entitled Question.
Asma’ had in an Instagram post questioned the direction taken by the female group which she described as not in line with the cultural values of the Malaysian society. – Focus Malaysia
