Muda Interfaith Programmes Should Be Celebrated Not Blocked
Muda information chief Luqman Long has come strongly against the banning of Muslims from attending programmes at non-Muslim houses of worship.
In a statement today, he said that interfaith programmes should be celebrated, not blocked.
“I believe that this is an irrelevant decision and does not help the community of multiple religions and races to live harmoniously.
“Muda itself has held programmes for all members including the celebration of Pongal, Hari Raya Aidiliftri, Maulidur Rasul, Christmas Day, Thaipusam and Chinese New Year. Many times.
“They are attended by all Muda members - whether Muslim or non-Muslim.
“There are also non-Muslim Muda members who come to clean the surau and the mosque areas after flooding,” said Luqman (above).
Mohd Zawawi Ahmad MughniHe said this after Selangor Religious Affairs executive councillor Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni said any programme involving Muslims at non-Muslim houses of worship is not allowed.
This came amid an uproar from the opposition claiming alleged "Christian evangelism" over Impact Malaysia’s “Projek Artikel 11” which involved youth visiting houses of worship as part of the agency’s efforts to increase awareness of the country’s diverse society.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh - whose ministry oversees Impact Malaysia - said no Muslim youths were involved in the programme.
Luqman said that he found the latest decision very worrying.
“For so long, there has never been a problem when people celebrate these programmes in solidarity with other faiths.
“Are non-Hindus people no longer able to go to Batu Caves after this?
“How about my Christian and Buddhist friends? Can they no longer visit the mosque?” he asked.
“What about national leaders who are invited to celebrate by followers of other religions? Will they also be banned from entering or are there other conditions that are more relaxed for leaders?”
He said that if the people wanted to know more and exchange ideas and opinions on religion, as long as it is done with politeness and mutual respect, they should be given space to do so. - Mkini
