Mp Urges Cops To Allow Tangkapazambaki Rally
Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah has urged authorities to facilitate rather than restrict the planned rally against MACC chairperson Azam Baki in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.
The former Bersih chairperson who in the past had led several major rallies said the government and police should learn to not grind the city to a halt with their announcement on road and rail service closures.
"The nation has learnt that repression will not kill the will of the people as they have every right to express their discontent
"If it is Covid-19 that the authorities are afraid of then they could help facilitate the protest as that's their role and not be the stumbling blocks," Maria said in a statement.
"I strongly urge the authorities that claim to support reforms to allow the people to gather.
"Don't have knee-jerk reactions to peaceful initiatives. Facilitate as you have more than a thousand police personnel," she said.
Maria Chin AbdullahDang Wangi district police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya earlier today said 1,010 personnel will be deployed for the 'Tangkap Azam Baki' protest mobilised by civil society groups tomorrow.
Further, Noor Dellhan also announced the closure of six major roads around the city centre and temporary suspension of operations for 24 selected stations across all rail lines - the LRT Ampang-Sri Petaling line, LRT Kelana Jaya line, MRT Sungai Buloh line, monorail and KTM.
The protest was mobilised in the wake of a shareholding scandal implicating the MACC chief.
Azam came under scrutiny recently after allegations of him having owned shares in two companies back in 2015 surfaced.
According to Excel Force Bhd’s 2015 annual report, Azam owned 2,156,000 warrants in the company as of March 21, 2016. At the time, Azam was the head of MACC’s investigation division.
However, in a press conference on Jan 5, Azam said he did not do anything wrong as the shares were bought by his brother, who only used his name. - Mkini
