Mp Questions If Proposed Quarantine Aims At Suppressing Votes In Sabah
SABAH POLLS | Seputeh MP Teresa Kok has questioned if the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government intended to exploit the Covid-19 issue to prevent Sabahans from coming home to vote
This came after Health Minister Dr Adham Baba suggested that those who vote in the Sabah snap polls should undergo a 14-day quarantine upon returning to West Malaysia, which Kok (above) called an inappropriate move. She said this is because Covid-19 cases in the state revolved around the Benteng LD cluster, which involved detention centres and prisons
"This shows that the increase in cases only focuses on this cluster which includes undocumented migrant detention centres in Tawau and Lahad Datu, not the whole of Sabah," she said in a statement from Sandakan today. "I am deeply concerned with Adham's statement that the Health Ministry (is suggesting) to impose a compulsory quarantine on those returning to the Peninsular from Sabah
"Although Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had dismissed his statement, it raises the question on whether the PN government wants to use the Covid-19 issue as an excuse to prevent Sabahans from voting," she added
Dr Adham BabaKok said the suggestion will not only affect voters who are based in the Peninsular, but also government officials who carry out duties between Sabah and Semenanjung as well as economic activities between the two places. Yesterday, the Health Ministry said that there were 48 new cases in Sabah including 44 from the Benteng LD cluster, three from the new Laut cluster, and one case detected from a pre-surgery screening in Kota Kinabalu
The Laut cluster is an outbreak among undocumented migrants in Kunak, Sabah. - Mkini
