Mp Alleges Ex Ag Abused Power Over Probes On Najib Lodges Police Report
Klang MP Charles Santiago today lodged a police report against former attorney-general (AG) Mohamed Apandi Ali over alleged abuse of powers to cover up investigations into the SRC International and 1MDB trial.
Charles, who earlier lodged his report at the Klang Selatan district police department, in a statement accused Apandi of having intentions to free former premier Najib Abdul Razak from facing his corruption trial.
In lodging his report, Charles (above, left) cited a May 23 judgment delivered by High Court judge Azimah Omar in dismissing a defamation suit filed by Apandi against DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.
"In her judgment, Azimah noted that Apandi’s delegation 'did not even meet nor speak to the alleged donor' despite saying otherwise in a press conference on Jan 26, 2016.
"At the press session, Apandi claimed that he sent a mission to Riyadh and had personally met the donor and recorded the donor’s personal confirmation of the donation," said Charles.
"He then proceeded to clear Najib of all wrongdoings, confirming that the RM42 million in Najib’s account was a donation from a Saudi prince. This is a blatant lie," stressed the DAP lawmaker.
Former AG Mohamed Apandi AliIn a 100-page judgment released on July 21, Azimah noted that it was strikingly evident that Apandi showed disinterest and indifference to elementary rule of law and even common sense.
Based on Azimah's judgement and observations, Charles said he held the view that Apandi had fabricated information and lied while in office, leading to the abuse of his powers as the principal legal adviser of the country.
"I hereby lodge this police report so that investigations can commence against Apandi in this matter," he stressed.
Lawyer John Fam, who accompanied Charles, pointed out that Azimah's comments were made based on Apandi's testimony and evidence given under oath and so would not be misquoted.
While acknowledging that an AG has absolute discretion to pursue a charge or otherwise, Fam insisted Apandi had fabricated evidence in clearing Najib.
"Without doubt, a criminal offence has no limitation period.
"So after discussion, YB (Charles) as an MP for Klang, lodged a police report and we are calling the police to investigate," the lawyer said. - Mkini
