More Than 10 Million Vehicles On Highways

PETALING JAYA: The long weekend and start of the school holidays saw over 10 million vehicles on several major highways in the country in two days, say traffic police.
Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department principal assistant director (enforcement) Supt Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said that at least 5.3 million vehicles were recorded on major highways on Friday while there were 5.6 million the next day.
“As at 2pm on Sunday, heavy traffic was reported along the North-South Expressway near Gua Tempurung in Perak as well as in Johor, while the same condition was also seen along the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway.
“The heavy traffic can be attributed to those taking advantage of the long weekend and school holidays to travel,” he said when contacted yesterday.
The first term week-long holiday of the current 2022/2023 school session started last Friday or Saturday for different states.
Today is a public holiday to commemorate the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s birthday.

Supt Bakri urged motorists to be patient and courteous, and refrain from provoking other motorists, especially when they are caught in a gridlock.
“We have noticed that as traffic becomes congested, a number of motorists will start resorting to driving on the emergency lane.
“Our personnel are out on the field to ensure traffic flows smoothly and motorists abide by regulations.
“They will not hesitate to take action against anyone caught intentionally violating traffic rules,” he said.
Supt Bakri also advised motorists with dashboard cameras to forward footage of errant motorists to the Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department Facebook page (Jabatan Siasatan dan Penguat–kuasaan Trafik PDRM).- Star
