PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Indian Skills Initiative (Misi) is continuing to drive workforce empowerment by equipping Malaysian Indian lorry drivers with high-value skills which will allow them to command higher salaries and provide them with greater job security.
In a statement, the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) said lorry drivers who graduate from a three-day dangerous goods driver training programme in Klang will be able to pursue entrepreneurship, secure jobs in leading logistics firms or advance to managerial roles.
The certification, which is recognised by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Malaysia, is in line with environmental, social and governance requirements and international safety standards.
The training, which started yesterday, will be conducted again on Feb 15 before concluding on Feb 22.
The training programme is an initiative spearheaded by the human resources ministry through HRD Corp, which said that the encouraging response reflected the strong demand for specialised logistics courses in the country.
HRD Corp also said the large number of participants reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upskilling and empowering Malaysian Indian talent.
One of the participants, V Kalaiselvan, 29, said he was grateful for the opportunity to join in the training.
“Finding a job is tough, but this programme gives me hope,” said Kalaiselvan, who has been looking for a steady job for the past six months.
Another participant, D Devandran, said he had travelled from Ipoh to enrol in the course.
The 38-year-old, who has spent the last three years as a gig worker, said he was confident the training would help in his career growth.
Last May, human resources minister Steven Sim said the RM30 million allocation for Misi to be implemented by his ministry and the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) will be used to initiate programmes to upskill youths from the Indian community in the country.
Batu MP P Prabakaran, who is also the chairman of Mitra’s special task force, attended the opening ceremony for the course yesterday.
He said the course marks another milestone in achieving Misi’s goal of equipping lorry drivers with essential certification and expertise to advance their careers. - FMT
