Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) president Datuk Dr Adnan Mat said that civil servants must remain cautious, as a wrong decision could jeopardise their careers and financial stability.
"Any programme organised on government premises must obtain official approval from the relevant authorities. If there are any suspicious loan-related programmes, please report them to your department's administration," he told Berita Harian today.
Previously, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that a financial consultancy firm behind a personal loan fraud syndicate had manipulated turnaround time during the loan approval process by banks.
He said that in addition to appointing celebrities and public figures as official ambassadors to promote the company, the syndicate also targeted school teachers and other civil servants.
Meanwhile, Adnan urged civil servants to ensure that any institution or company involved is registered with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) or the Finance Ministry.
"Avoid dealing with companies that do not have official approval from the authorities. Additionally, civil servants are reminded not to disclose their payslips, Employees Provident Fund (EPF) statements, banking details, or personal documents to unknown parties, as syndicates often use this information to take out loans without the owner's knowledge," he said.
Adnan also advised civil servants against signing unclear documents.
"Always read and understand the loan terms and conditions before signing any agreement. Avoid signing blank forms, as they can be manipulated by irresponsible parties. Also, ensure that the loan interest rates offered are reasonable and comply with BNM guidelines. If the interest rate is excessively high or there are hidden charges, avoid proceeding with the loan." - NST
