Minister Cabinet Discussed Azam S Case To Proceed From Sc S Statement
The cabinet today discussed the controversial share ownership involving MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law) Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
The cabinet decided to let the Finance Ministry or Security Commission (SC) issue a statement on the matter, he said.
"It was discussed at length the pros and cons (related to Azam's share ownership) in the cabinet meeting this morning," he told Malaysiakini when contacted.
"The cabinet decided that since the SC is under the Ministry of Finance, the statement is either coming from the SC or the Ministry of Finance, and then we will take the thing from there," Wan Junaidi (above) said.
The Santubong MP did not divulge any further information on the cabinet's discussion.
Yesterday, the SC wrapped up its investigation into Azam's share ownership and said there was 'no conclusive evidence' of proxy trading by the top graft buster, as according to Section 25 (4) of the Securities Industry (Central Depositories) Act 1991 (Sicda).
This prompted DAP's Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang to question the cabinet's stance on the matter.
In a statement today, the SC said it found Azam had "control" over his own trading account.
This appears to contradict Azam’s explanation that he allowed his brother Nasir Baki to purchase shares using his trading account.
Azam came under the spotlight over his ownership of 1,930,000 shares in Gets Global Berhad (previously KBES Berhad) on April 30, 2015, worth around RM772,000 at the time.
His shareholding in Gets Global Berhad went down to 1,029,500 as of March 31, 2016, worth around RM340,000 at the time.
He also held 2,156,000 warrants in Excel Force MSC Berhad in March 2016.
The share ownership in 2015 and 2016 raised questions on whether it was commensurate with his income as a public servant and conflict of interest concerns.
Azam claimed the shares were not his but purchased by his brother in his name, prompting the SC to also get involved over the possible misuse of his trading account. - Mkini
