Melaka Gateway Component Loke Vows To Double Check With Doe
The government will check on the regulatory approvals for a major component of the Melaka Gateway project, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
This came after the Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad informed Parliament that the Department of Environment (DOE) has yet to receive the environmental impact assessment report (EIA) for the megaproject’s Pulau Satu component.
This was despite the developer, KAJ Development Sdn Bhd’s announcement last month that the project is being revived after receiving approvals from state and federal governments.
“That is the answer given by the minister in Parliament so we will stand by that,” Loke said, referring to Nik Nazmi’s parliamentary reply.
“We will double-check with DOE before we proceed any further,” he added.
Transport Minister Anthony LokeLoke was speaking to reporters at a press conference at the Parliament building today, where he was asked whether a new EIA report would be submitted.
Originally launched in 2014, the RM43 billion Melaka Gateway project covers 246.45ha and is aimed at creating three artificial islands.
It includes facilities such as a deep-sea port, cruise and container terminals, marinas, shipbuilding and repair services, maritime industrial park, hotels and condominiums.
The project was originally slated for completion by 2025, but the Malacca government pulled the plug on the project in 2020 when KAJ failed to complete reclamation works on schedule.
The project was reinstated in March last year as part of the Malacca Waterfront Economic Zone and involves an even larger reclamation effort along 33km of Malacca’s coastline. - Mkini
