Melaka Gateway No Eia From Developer Yet For Pulau Satu Project Ministry

The Environment Department (DOE) has not yet received the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report from KAJ Development Sdn Bhd (KAJD) for the Melaka Gateway’s Pulau Satu project.
This is according to the Natural Resources, Environment, and Climate Change Ministry in a written parliamentary reply to Khoo Poay Tiong (Pakatan Harapan-Kota Melaka) who had asked whether the project, which involves land reclamation, had received an EIA.
"The DOE still has not received the EIA from the developer for the development proposal on Pulau Satu. Based on the term of reference validated on Sept 30, 2021, marina construction and cruise terminals were elements considered by the project in the EIA," said the ministry.
Khoo also asked whether the Melaka Gateway project was ‘redundant’ as the DOE had already greenlit another nearby cruise terminal project by Far East Sdn Bhd.
To this, the ministry said the cruise terminal concept for the latter project has been ‘dropped’, upon written comments from the Malacca Chief Minister's Office on Feb 8, 2023.
"The project concept stated in the EIA report titled 'The Proposed Reclamation of Deep-Sea International Multipurpose Port & Commercial Plot at City Area XLIII (43) & XLVI (44)’, District Melaka Tengah, Malacca by Far East (Melaka) Sdn Bhd, which was approved by the DOE on May 26, 2023, does not involve cruise terminal construction."
Last month, KAJD announced that the RM43 billion Melaka Gateway mega project will be revived.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said his ministry will expedite the approval of the operating licence for the Malacca International Cruise Terminal (MICT), recognising its potential to boost tourism in the state.
Environmental NGO Save our Seashores Melaka (SOS Melaka) had previously claimed that the Melaka Gateway project has caused erosion and pollution in the surrounding area. - Mkini
