Isham Willing To Debate With Zahid On Neutral Ground
Umno supreme council member Isham Jalil is willing to engage in a debate with party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
However, the debate must be held on a ‘neutral ground’, Isham said, rather than at the supreme council meeting which is dominated by those appointed or aligned to the president.
“If I debate him on his turf, that would be biased and unwise. I’m not as ‘stupid’ as he thinks,” the former Umno information chief wrote on Facebook.
Isham (above, right) was responding to Zahid who, in an exclusive interview with Berita Harian, said his critics should debate with him if they are “man enough”.
He added that he is willing to resign from his supreme council position if Zahid wins the debate, but, if he wins, the latter should conduct a referendum or election for the president’s post.
It is worth noting that Isham has been very vocal against Umno working with DAP in the coalition government, and was spared the axe in the supreme council meeting last month.
Earlier this year, Zahid said he was ‘ready to fight’ for the president’s post, but later a motion was passed for the party’s top two positions to not be contested.
Former minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who was a key figure in calling for the president’s position to be up for contest, was eventually sacked from the party for “breaching party discipline”.
