Man Promised To Make Me A Star Borrowed All My Money Claims Cancer Patient
Cancer patient Dinesh Raja Kumar says he needs the money for his treatment.PETALING JAYA: A stage 4 cancer patient claims a businessman who borrowed more than RM90,000 from him now refuses to pay up and he desperately needs the money for his treatment.
Aspiring artist Dinesh Raja Kumar, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2019, claims that Michael (not his real name) promised that he would help him make it big in the entertainment industry.
Over time, he said, the businessman borrowed a total of RM91,017.55 from him.
Dinesh, 35, said he had come across Michael, 50, on Facebook in 2018 and was impressed by the lavish life the entrepreneur seemed to live.
After chatting on the social media network, they met for the first time in December 2020 when Michael, he said, persuaded him to lend him RM3,000 the same day.
Dinesh alleged that it would be the first of 25 times he lent Michael money, the last in March.
He said the money included his life savings, his Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) withdrawal for his cancer treatment, withdrawals from his credit card, and money he secured by pawning items, such as the ring his mother had given him.
“I was excited when I met him because he said he could be my producer,” Dinesh told FMT.
“I can do stand-up comedy, sing and dance. He promised to make me a star.
“But he kept asking to borrow money as he said he was cheated in business dealings. And every time, he promised he would pay me back the following week as he had money coming in.”
Dinesh claimed that Michael failed to repay him after repeated requests. So he took to social media in March to publicise his case, and also lodged nine police reports.
“I need the money for my cancer treatment, which I cannot do right now,” he said.
He claimed that Michael’s lawyer had sent him a cease and desist letter, adding that their client had also lodged a police report against Dinesh for harassment.
Contacted by FMT, the lawyer said the issue was a civil matter between the two and declined to comment on Dinesh’s allegations.
Michael, meanwhile, told FMT he had had every intention of repaying Dinesh until he resorted to Facebook with his allegations.
“I’m not denying that I borrowed RM91,000 from him. I never once said I won’t pay him, so why must he do this to me?” he asked. He said he had returned RM550.
“I have instructed my lawyer to sue him. I hate to do this, but he has left me with no choice,” he said, adding that Dinesh had “tormented” him and his family with repeated calls for the money. - FMT
