Man Dies Within Days In Anti Drug Agency S Custody Ngo Claims
An NGO is calling for action to be taken after a 24-year-old man supposedly died after spending two days under the National Anti-Drugs Agency’s (AADK) custody.
The group Eliminating Deaths and Abuse in Custody Together (Edict) said the man was arrested by the AADK at 9pm on Sunday, and the family was informed that he was in critical condition in hospital at 1am the next day.
The man ultimately passed away on July 20, the group claimed, citing information provided by the deceased’s next-of-kin.
Edict also claimed that the family witnessed AADK officers beating the deceased during his arrest.
“Edict believes if the deceased’s family’s allegations are true, then the AADK officers’ methods in detaining the victim is clearly inhuman and beyond the boundaries of the law.
“Thus, Edict urges the Kedah police to investigate the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
“Edict also urges the Attorney-General’s Chambers to prosecute the perpetrators in court, and the AADK should suspend the officers involved pending a police investigation,” it said in a statement today.
According to Edict, the man’s family had claimed that the deceased was beaten with a baton while already handcuffed.
“The victim was said to be screaming in pain. Nevertheless, the AADK officers stepped on his body and neck, causing him to be unable to resist,” it said.
Malaysiakini has contacted the Kedah police regarding the allegations and is awaiting a response. - Mkini
