Malaysians Amused By Entrepreneur Who Lost Rm180k In Jewellery Theft During Umrah Trip

LOOKING sharply attired is all fine and dandy but there are always a suitable time and place for it.
This seems to be the over-riding sentiment that greeted news of an entrepreneur who claimed to have a lost jewellery amounting to RM180,000 when returning from her umrah (mini haj) trip.
According to mStar, Nurliyanna Abdurrahman realised something was amiss upon returning home.
She noticed that the items comprising gold and white gold jewellery which had been carefully stowed in a container at the bottom of her luggage was at the very top and had been searched. Needless to say, the precious items were now gone.
News of this alleged theft was shared on X by user mgtshrzmn (@megat_sharezman) who queried why did the businesswoman carry so much jewellery during a trip to perform umrah. He sought to be enlightened on the purpose.
The post which has been viewed 363.1K times at time of writing drew plenty of reaction, not all complimentary.
For starters, there were memes aplenty highlighting that many commenters thought the episode amusing or denoting a lack of sympathy for this outlandish show of wealth by someone bound for the holy land to perform her pilgrimage.

One commenter sarcastically noted wearing such expensive jewellery helped ascend heaven better. Perhaps, it should also helped impress the cops should the entrepreneur encounter any problems when travelling.

It was also insinuated that it was inappropriate to be dressing up for pilgrimage trips with one observer snidely stating that “our people will show off their thick bracelets at these times”.

The need to advertise one’s wealth was also highlighted as to why this lady saw fit to carry such jewellery with her abroad.

Pointing out that it was an unnecessary risk to pack such luxury items when travelling, one commenter shared a similar experience of a friend who lost a gold ring. Why bring it along?
Labelling it a lack of logical thinking, there was a distinct lack of sympathy for these fashionistas.

Some blamed social media for this, surmising the need to upload photos of the trip that were flash and better looking than the rest who had gone to perform their pilgrimage. The overwhelming urge for content had led to this unfortunate episode.

A few commenters cheekily suggested that she had packed the jewellery as she feared of break-ins at home while she was away.

However, a few commenters did offer a viable reason for packing the jewellery for the trip by claiming that it is highly sought after in certain Arab states and that these items can be traded at a favourable rate. Or to be pawned in the event one runs out of cash or in an emergency situation.

Some social media followers claimed they had read that the unfortunate pilgrim had accidently packed the jewellery and that she had no intention of wearing those items on the trip.
However, that still doesn’t explain why she chose to pack those items in the luggage upon returning.

Whether for trade or for showing off, it does seem to be an unnecessary risk to be packing that much jewellery in one’s baggage. Wouldn’t it be better to have packed it the hand luggage?
Whatever one may want to say about ostentatious displays of wealth, the utter ridiculousness of stowing almost RM200,000 worth of jewellery inside luggage just beggars belief.
