Malaysian Army Overrepresented By Malays Should The Other Races Join

THE age-old story of why the other races are underrepresented in the Malaysian army has reared its ugly head once more.
It is a story steeped in racism, stereotypes and unresolved conflict, ingredients that make up the stuff that go viral online.
So it comes as no surprise when such a topic by netizen Siti Jenar grabbed widespread attention on X, with over 3,800 shares, 75 comments and counting.
In the viral post, the other races were urged to participate in the Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM) which overwhelmingly consists of Malays.
As history has shown, such a topic will get ugly very quickly, so let’s head over to the comment section to find out.
A good number of netizens pointed out the lack of patriotism of the Chinese, stating that they were either interested in money or were loyal to China.
“Try to guess which of the race that has the most people renouncing their Malaysian citizenship?” said Pajeeta while acikmung added, “How to become rich maaaa become soldier. Says ah chong.”

Another netizen claimed that they were more likely to defend China, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Netizen Mohammad Shahril continued that the other races wanted to be members of the Parlimen or to represent the people as there were more profit.
“They can change the government, play truant while getting paid and allowances. They get a penchant too,” he said.
To counter these arguments, a netizen, likely a Chinese, said that they were more interested in defending the economy of Malaysia instead.

Mengdexs further claimed the Malays usually said it was Tanah Melayu, that the Chinese were merely immigrants.
Also, Derek Lee painted a different picture, saying that his uncle had to convert to Islam just to climb the ladder in the army.

He further claimed that his Indian neighbour said the officers there were very racist when it comes to selection.
On another note, Rajaei pointed out that if the pay of a soldier was five figures surely many people would have joined.

One netizen added that the Chinese boys were not as hardened as the Malays. “A long time ago during P E at school, the Chinese boys ran until they wanted to vomit. The Malays were just fine,” he said.
Rubah also warned that the other races will get ragging if they joined the army. — Focus Malaysia
